Tampa Bay Business Journal: Florida insurers face multibillion-dollar test from monster Hurricane Helene

Early estimates place insured losses from Hurricane Helene between $3 billion and $6 billion — mammoth figures that experts say are on the conservative side.

Hurricane Helene is expected to be one of the largest Gulf of Mexico hurricanes in 20 years when it makes landfall as a Category 3 storm in the Panhandle on Thursday afternoon. Its 375-mile-wide wind radius makes it large enough to bring catastrophic damage to much of the Florida peninsula.

NSI Insurance CEO Oscar Seikaly estimates damages in excess of $10 billion, largely because structures in Tampa Bay and areas along the Gulf Coast are older and especially vulnerable to damage.
