2026 Hurricane Season NOAA Predictions

While the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season produced 13 named storms, five hurricanes, and four major hurricanes, this hurricane season, running June 1, 2026 through November 30, 2026, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is predicting a below-normal hurricane season for the Atlantic basin this year with 35% chance of a near-normal season, a 10% chance of an above-normal season, and a 55% chance of a below-normal season.

Specifically, NOAA is forecasting 8 to 14 named storms this season, defined as systems with sustained winds of at least 39 mph. Of those, 3-6 are expected to strengthen into hurricanes with winds of 74 mph or higher, including 1 to 3 major hurricanes classified as Category 3, 4, or 5 storms with winds exceeding 111 mph. The agency says it has 70% confidence in these projections. By comparison, an average Atlantic hurricane season produces 14 named storms, seven hurricanes, and three major hurricanes.

Regardless of the predictions, NOAA Director Ken Graham states, “Preparing now for hurricane season and not waiting for a storm to threaten is essential for staying ahead of any storm.’
