South Florida Business Journal: Fatal Fort Lauderdale crane accident to have consequences for contractors, insurance

The fatal crane accident in downtown Fort Lauderdale could have serious ramifications for the construction insurance market, especially for the contractors involved.

At the construction site of Gables Riverwalk, at 333 N. New River Drive, a steel section being added to the tower crane fell while it was being hoisted with a construction worker on the platform. Fort Lauderdale police identified the worker as Jorge De La Torre. De La Torre, 27, died.

Three people were injured in the April 4 incident, with two hospitalized. One person was injured when the piece of the crane fell on his Tesla. The city’s bridge was also damaged and temporarily closed.
